MADRID, (CAJ News) – PRESSURE is mounting on FIFA as voices from across the world call for decisive action against the United States and Israel following their alleged involvement in military action against Iran.

Critics argue that the situation mirrors the precedent set during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, when Russian teams were suspended from international football competitions.

At the centre of the debate is Gianni Infantino, with some commentators demanding consistency in the application of FIFA’s rules.

They argue that failure to act would highlight what they describe as double standards in global football governance.

Renowned South African broadcaster Robert Marawa expressed his concern, stating: “If Iran doesn’t play, I don’t think anybody should play that World Cup.”

His remarks reflect growing unease among fans and analysts who believe FIFA must apply uniform standards regardless of geopolitical influence.

Social media reactions have amplified the debate.

Ankit Mayank wrote: “Mexico openly revolted against the US & Israel for killing 168 schoolgirls in Iran. Mexico offered to host Iran’s FIFA World Cup 2026 matches after Trump’s open threats. Ladies & Gentlemen, meet Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, with a SPINE OF STEEL. Reason why the world needs more women leaders. Mad respect.”

Others have drawn parallels with calls for national action.

Kenneth (@Segafi1) commented: “When Julius (Malema) urged SAFA (South African Football Association) to withdraw Bafana Bafana from this world cup everyone made a joke out of it,” referencing earlier suggestions linked to Julius Malema.

Further criticism came from Galkoooon Hlatxsz, who stated: “If @FIFAWorldCup has balls USA should be banned. Same red card they gave Russia.”

Similarly, Makgabeng Molekoa argued: “All countries should boycott that World Cup,” while Legasa Mathabathe added: “The hypocrisy of the superpowers is pathetic. USA should be suspended if not banned.”

Siyanda Thabede🇿🇦 proposed a hosting rethink: “The upcoming world cup should not be staged in America. It should only be hosted in Mexico and Canada. America and Israel should be barred from participating.”

Echoing this sentiment, Nizalwa Ngobani Kwa’Ntu said: “And if Israel is to play and Iran doesn’t play, I don’t think anybody with the healthy consciousness should play that 2026 World Cup in USA.”

The controversy raises broader concerns about governance and fairness in international sport. Critics argue that inconsistent enforcement of rules undermines FIFA’s credibility and risks politicising football further.

The perception that some nations are punished while others escape scrutiny fuels distrust among fans and stakeholders alike.

Commentator Goodman Mhlong stated: “FIFA has shown us that they have been controlled by the United States the terrorist country who have killed innocent civilians in Palestine and killed children in elementary school in Iran,” while Ose Ramz added: “Supported 100%. Solidarity with Iran means rejection of atrocities, arrogance, bullying, hypocrisy and double standards of the west.”

As the debate intensifies, FIFA faces a complex challenge: balancing political neutrality with ethical accountability.

For many observers, the issue is no longer just about football, but about the integrity of global sport and whether its governing bodies can uphold consistent principles in an increasingly divided world.
