Ghana, Wales draw

by RUSSELL ADADEVOH
ACCRA, (CAJ News) GHANA’S Black Stars delivered an encouraging performance ahead of the FIFA World Cup after holding Wales to a 1-1 draw in an international friendly played in Cardiff on Tuesday evening.

Although Wales snatched a dramatic equaliser deep into stoppage time, Ghana will leave the encounter with plenty of positives as they continue fine-tuning preparations for football’s biggest tournament.

The Black Stars demonstrated discipline, organisation and resilience against a Welsh side playing in front of their home supporters.

After weathering early pressure, Ghana gradually grew into the match and looked dangerous whenever they attacked.

Wales enjoyed more possession and created several opportunities, with winger Dan James proving particularly lively.

However, Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced an outstanding display between the posts, making crucial saves to frustrate the hosts and keep his side firmly in the contest.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 66th minute when substitute Caleb Yirenkyi reacted quickest after Ernest Nuamah’s powerful run and effort struck the upright.

Yirenkyi calmly converted the rebound to give Ghana a deserved lead and spark celebrations among the travelling supporters.

Just when it appeared Ghana would secure a morale-boosting victory, Wales substitute Lewis Koumas headed home in added time to rescue a draw for the hosts.

Despite conceding late, Ghana’s performance offered several reasons for optimism ahead of the World Cup.

Midfielder Thomas Partey controlled proceedings in the centre of the park, while Nuamah’s pace and direct running consistently troubled the Welsh defence.

Ati-Zigi was arguably Ghana’s standout performer, producing a series of vital interventions throughout the match.

For Wales, James was their most threatening player, while Koumas made a significant impact from the bench with his late equaliser.

Importantly for Ghana, the match highlighted a squad growing in confidence and cohesion under coach Carlos Queiroz.

Despite injury setbacks affecting several key players before the tournament, the Black Stars have assembled a balanced squad blending experience and youthful energy.

With their World Cup opener against Panama approaching, Ghana’s morale remains positive.

The draw against Wales may not have delivered victory, but it showcased a determined side capable of competing strongly on the global stage and carrying the hopes of an entire continent.
