Global outrage as civilian targets hit in Middle East

World condemns the United States-Israel for deliberately striking on Iran civilian infrastructure

LONDON, (CAJ News) – A growing international outcry is mounting as humanitarian voices warn that the ongoing Middle East conflict is drifting into unlawful and dangerous territory, with increasing concern over the conduct of United States and Israeli military operations.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has issued a stark warning, urging restraint and adherence to international law amid reports of widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure.

In a statement delivered by ICRC President Mirjana Spoljaric, the organization emphasized the grave risks posed by current military tactics.

She cautioned, “Deliberate threats, whether in rhetoric or in action, against essential civilian infrastructure and nuclear facilities must not become the new norm in warfare.”

Her remarks come as critical facilities across the region—power plants, hospitals, schools, and water systems—have reportedly been damaged or destroyed.

Critics argue that rather than engaging directly with Iranian military forces, the United States under Donald Trump, alongside Israel, has focused disproportionately on infrastructure vital to civilian life.

This approach, widely condemned by observers, has intensified humanitarian suffering and drawn accusations of collective punishment.

Particularly disturbing are reports that school children have been killed in recent strikes, sparking international condemnation and renewed calls for accountability.

Meanwhile, Iran maintains that its military actions are directed at legitimate military targets, positioning itself as responding within the bounds of defensive warfare.

This contrast has sharpened global debate about proportionality and legality in the conflict.

The ICRC did not mince words in its broader warning: “Any war fought without limits is incompatible with the law. It is indefensible, inhumane and devastating for entire populations.”

The organization further highlighted the catastrophic risks associated with escalating attacks near sensitive sites, noting, “Most alarming are potential threats to nuclear facilities. Any miscalculation can cause irreversible consequences for generations to come.”

Reinforcing its humanitarian mandate, the ICRC called on all parties to immediately change course.

“I urgently call on parties to spare civilians and civilian objects in all military operations. It is their obligation under international humanitarian law,” Spoljaric stated.

She added a broader appeal to global leadership: “States must respect and ensure respect for the rules of war in both what they say and what they do. The world cannot succumb to a political culture that prioritizes death over life.”

As the conflict intensifies, the divide between military objectives and humanitarian consequences continues to widen, raising urgent questions about accountability, legality, and the human cost of modern warfare.
