US President Donald Trump

MOGADISHU,(CAJ News) – AFRICAN leaders, journalists, and citizens from across the continent have strongly condemned U.S President Donald Trump’s recent attacks on Somalis in Minnesota, describing his words and actions as outrageous, racist, and deeply offensive.

Trump’s remarks, perceived as targeting Americans of Somali descent, have sparked widespread outrage, with Africans emphasizing the need for unity in the face of growing global racism.

Multiple voices from across the continent have denounced the U.S president for what they see as a pattern of discriminatory rhetoric, unfair policies, and demeaning language toward Africa.

Award-winning Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono was particularly vocal, calling Trump a “racist who has no right to question the citizenship of Americans whose grandparents came from Somalia, especially given his own German and Scottish ancestry.”

Chin’ono noted, “America elected a racist who simply emboldens others to express what they already felt. By the same logic, Trump himself could be called a foreigner.”

Chin’ono also highlighted Trump’s threats to remove South Africa from the G20, framing the decision as racially motivated.

“South Africa has a black president and a majority-black population. Trump replaced them with Poland, a white nation. This is not diplomacy; it is blatant racism,” Chin’ono said.

The journalist criticised Africans in the U.S, who supported Trump, arguing that lack of awareness and attention to history contributes to misplaced admiration.

“Our people (Africans) often focus on soundbites and theatrics instead of understanding the larger implications of such leaders on our continent,” he said.

South African labour leader Zwelinzima Vavi condemned Trump’s language, recalling that he once referred to African nations as “shitholes” and recently called Somalia “garbage.”

Vavi said, “Nothing about Somalia is garbage. What is garbage is Trump’s toxic, white-supremacist worldview. Africa will not be dehumanized by a failed president whose legacy is chaos, hatred, and economic devastation. Hands off Somalia. Hands off Africa.”

He called on the African Union (AU) to respond decisively.

Observers also drew attention to broader historical grievances.

Sello Samuel noted, “Trump ignores how the United States historically influenced and intensified conflicts in Somalia yet now insults its people.”

Marius Yusuf Monhaté emphasized internal African challenges, urging leaders to focus on self-liberation rather than allowing foreign powers to exploit divisions.

Many analysts highlighted Trump’s broader record on Africa, including imposing unfair tariffs on African exports, undermining African leadership, and dismissing nations with derogatory terms.

Cosi Cosi observed, “Trump’s slander serves no diplomatic purpose. He fails to acknowledge America’s exploitative role in shaping Africa’s economic and political challenges.”

Ernest Buthelezi criticized some African leaders for their complicity, saying, “Africa needs leaders who will stand against supremacist rhetoric, not worship it.”

Others pointed out the irony of African nations suffering from both external insults and internal corruption, noting that resource exploitation continues under Trump-friendly policies.

The continent’s reaction reflects growing awareness among African youths and civil society groups, who are increasingly uniting against what they see as racialised attacks on their people and sovereignty.

The widespread condemnation underscores a larger call for respect, accountability, and equitable treatment of African nations on the global stage.

Trump’s attacks on Somalia are not isolated incidents but part of a larger pattern of demeaning Africa through derogatory language, unfair economic measures, and dismissive attitudes toward its leaders.

Africans insist that the world recognise the continent’s dignity and reject racist, exploitative policies.
