KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – THE Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC’s) long-awaited return to the global football stage has been captured in a powerful new project that blends sport, culture and national identity, celebrating a historic FIFA World Cup qualification after more than five decades.
Framed as both an intimate and deeply reflective testimony, the project spotlights the journey, convictions and sense of responsibility carried by Chancel Mbemba, one of the most influential figures in modern African football.
Through an exclusive interview and striking photographic series, Mbemba shares insights into his upbringing in Kinshasa, his grounding in discipline and faith, and the enduring influence of Congolese music on his life and career.
He also reflects on his role as a proud ambassador of a nation whose resilience continues to inspire despite a complex and often challenging history.
“After 52 years of waiting, hope has finally become reality,” Mbemba said, capturing the emotion of a nation celebrating its return to the world’s biggest football stage.
The project unfolds against a backdrop of nationwide jubilation, with scenes of celebration across Kinshasa underscoring the unbreakable bond between the Leopards and their supporters.
For many, this qualification represents far more than a sporting milestone—it is a symbol of unity, pride and renewed belief.
Beyond the pitch, Mbemba emphasises the responsibility that comes with global visibility.
“Every player is an ambassador of Congo. It is important for us to speak to the world about what is happening in the east of the country,” he said, highlighting the role of football as a platform for awareness and positive change.
The initiative brings together leading voices from the Congolese creative diaspora, including Bakima and photographer Olivia Lifungula, alongside designer and stylist Daniel Manene Mavakala, designer Paola Buendia, and artist Bénédicte Lutumba.
Together, they craft a compelling visual and editorial narrative that transcends football—positioning this World Cup qualification within a broader story of heritage, resilience and national pride.
Global sportswear brand PUMA, a long-standing supporter of African football, has backed the project, reaffirming its cultural connection to the continent.
“In Congo and across Africa, PUMA is a popular brand… today I am proud of it,” Mbemba added.
As the Democratic Republic of Congo prepares to take its place on the world stage once again, this moment stands not only as a triumph of sport, but as a celebration of identity, unity and the enduring spirit of a nation ready to shine.
