OPINION: Global concerns over Trump’s stability

US President Donald Trump

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE world has always expected stability, discipline and rational judgement from the President of the United States.

The office carries enormous responsibility because every decision made in Washington can shake financial markets, influence wars, determine oil prices and affect billions of lives globally.

Yet under President Donald Trump, many observers increasingly question whether the world is witnessing strategic leadership or dangerous unpredictability.

Concerns over Trump’s mental stability, impulsiveness and erratic decision-making have intensified during the ongoing Iran crisis.

Within hours, Trump has repeatedly shifted positions on negotiations with Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

One moment he praises diplomatic progress and peace discussions, then shortly afterwards threatens military escalation and bombing campaigns against Tehran.

This inconsistency has created panic in global energy markets.

Oil prices have surged repeatedly because investors and governments no longer trust whether diplomacy or conflict will emerge from the White House on any given day.

Critics argue that no stable administration should communicate foreign policy through emotional reversals and contradictory public statements.

Even more alarming to many analysts was that while negotiations with Iran were ongoing, coordinated attacks involving the United States and Israel targeted Iranian interests, effectively undermining diplomatic engagement.

Such actions shocked the international community and reinforced perceptions that Trump’s leadership style is driven by impulse rather than coherent long-term strategy.

Trump’s controversial behaviour extends far beyond Iran.

His repeated threats to seize Greenland from Denmark, a NATO ally, stunned European governments and severely strained transatlantic relations.

At one stage, Trump threatened tariffs and coercive measures before abruptly reversing himself days later.

Perhaps most astonishing was Trump linking his Greenland campaign to his frustration over not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.

In communications reported internationally, Trump stated he no longer felt obliged to “think purely of peace” because Norway had not awarded him the prize.

Such statements deeply worried diplomats and political observers worldwide.

Mature global leadership is expected to operate independently of personal grievances or emotional frustration.

When personal ego appears connected to military threats or geopolitical disputes, questions naturally arise about emotional fitness for office.

Trump has also repeatedly imposed tariffs on allies, including NATO member states, sparking economic uncertainty and trade instability.

His administration has often announced dramatic policies only to reverse or soften them shortly afterwards, creating confusion for businesses, investors and allied governments.

Critics argue this unpredictability damages America’s credibility and weakens confidence in the global economic system.

Another troubling pattern has been Trump’s public humiliation of visiting leaders and political opponents.

Diplomacy traditionally relies on restraint, respect and measured communication.

Instead, Trump frequently embraces confrontation, insults and public ridicule as governing tools.

None of these actions medically prove dementia, madness or mental illness.

Only qualified health professionals can determine such conditions.

However, history repeatedly shows the dangers of nations being led by unstable or impulsive leaders.

When leaders become emotionally erratic, governments often drift into reckless wars, economic crises, diplomatic isolation and social division.

A mentally unstable leader may surround himself with loyalists rather than competent advisers, reject criticism, personalise state institutions and prioritise ego over national interest.

In extreme cases, entire countries suffer because citizens mistake chaos for strength.

The danger is even greater when the unstable leader controls the world’s largest military arsenal and one of the most powerful economies on Earth.

The central question confronting Americans and the global community is therefore no longer simply political.

It is whether unpredictability itself has become one of the greatest threats to international stability in the modern era.
