OTTAWA, (CAJ News) – ACCESS to world-class healthcare remains one of the clearest indicators of human development, social stability and economic progress.

As countries confront ageing populations, rising chronic diseases, emerging pandemics and rapid technological change, hospitals are no longer just places of treatment.

They are hubs of innovation, research, medical education and global collaboration. The world’s leading hospitals shape how medicine is practised, how lives are saved, and how future health systems are designed.

The Top 10 Best Hospitals in the World as of 2025 are drawn from the World’s Best Hospitals 2025 ranking published by Newsweek in partnership with Statista.

The ranking is widely regarded as one of the most credible global assessments of hospital performance. It is based on recommendations from tens of thousands of medical professionals worldwide, hospital quality indicators, patient satisfaction data, adoption of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), and research impact measured through bibliometric analysis.

Together, these criteria reflect both clinical excellence and patient-centred care.

At the top of the list is Mayo Clinic in Rochester, United States, which continues to set the global benchmark for integrated, team-based care and complex disease management. It is followed by Cleveland Clinic, also in the US, a global authority in cardiovascular medicine and specialised surgery.

Toronto General Hospital, part of Canada’s University Health Network, ranks third for its leadership in transplantation, cardiology and research-driven care.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital in the United States remains a pillar of modern medicine, renowned for its influence on medical education, research and specialised treatment.

Europe features prominently with Karolinska University Hospital in Sweden, closely linked to the Nobel-prize-awarding Karolinska Institute, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin in Germany, Europe’s largest university hospital and a leader in translational medicine.

Massachusetts General Hospital, one of America’s oldest teaching hospitals, continues to drive breakthroughs in neuroscience, cancer and precision medicine.

Outside North America and Europe, Sheba Medical Center in Israel has gained global recognition as a “hospital of the future,” particularly for digital health and artificial intelligence-driven care.

Singapore General Hospital stands as Asia’s flagship public hospital, combining efficiency, innovation and strong patient outcomes.

Completing the global top ten is University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, known for specialised medicine, research excellence and clinical precision.

While global rankings are often dominated by institutions in high-income countries, Africa is steadily building centres of medical excellence that serve millions and attract international recognition.

Among the leading hospitals in Africa are Netcare Milpark Hospital and Groote Schuur Hospital in South Africa, Aga Khan University Hospital in Kenya, As-Salam International Hospital in Egypt, Clinique Pasteur in Tunisia, Hôpital Général de Yaoundé in Cameroon, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Ghana, Mulago National Referral Hospital in Uganda, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Treichville in Côte d’Ivoire, and Hôpital Aristide Le Dantec in Senegal.

These institutions play a vital role in specialist care, medical training and public health across the continent.

Together, the world’s and Africa’s best hospitals demonstrate that healthcare excellence is driven by skilled professionals, strong research cultures, patient-centred systems and sustained investment.

As global health challenges intensify, these institutions will remain essential to saving lives, advancing medicine and shaping the future of healthcare worldwide.
