World backs Coventry’s Olympic move

HARARE, (CAJ News) – THE internet was flooded with reactions after Zimbabwe’s International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry announced a new policy barring transgender women from competing in the female category at future Olympic Games.

Coventry, the first woman to lead the IOC, said the decision was driven by fairness and athlete safety.

“As a former athlete, I passionately believe in the rights of all Olympians to take part in fair competition. The policy that we have announced is based on science and has been led by medical experts. At the Olympic Games, even the smallest margins can be the difference between victory and defeat,” Coventry said.

She added: “So, it is absolutely clear that it would not be fair for biological males to compete in the female category.”

Within minutes of the announcement, social media platforms were awash with reactions from commentators, many of whom applauded the move, arguing that it was long overdue.

Among them was Kanzen Locke, who wrote: “…….And she’s right. This is the best way to deal with those unaware of who they are.”

Ian Geldard added: “The first woman to lead the International Olympic Committee has decided to ban men from women’s events at the Olympics.”

Titch Maphosa remarked: “It took a Zimbabwean woman to make the change. Zimbabweans have been at the forefront of many a global position. One of these days I will compose a list for the world to behold.”

Jaci Jarrett Masztal commented: “A woman of character, ethics, common sense and respect for science and women! Thank you (Coventry)!”

Joining the discussion, Frank Danny said: “She (Coventry) has taken the bull by the horns. Nice one.”

Amy Dundee added: “Finally, this nonsense has to end. This should never have been allowed to happen in the first place. Hoping this is the end of it.”

Michela A. Betta wrote: “Had she (Coventry) been in charge in 2024 for the French Olympics — instead of the German Thomas Bach, who let Tony Estanguet lead the Paris Organising Committee — had she been in charge, the world would have looked more sane.”

Lisa Gennaro stated: “Glad to see she has some strength and not being pushed around.”

Joseph Warren commented: “The first woman to lead the International Olympic Committee has decided to ban biological men from women’s events at the Olympics. There I fixed it for you.”

Zwide Langa concurred: “She (Coventry) is 100% right to ban men from participating in women events.”

Mokgala Mashika observed: “Common sense is becoming common again. If transgender people want to compete in Olympics, they must create a transgender category so that they compete amongst themselves.”

Tnada Ibrahim Jonathan wrote: “Remember how this man (Algerian) bloodied noses of female boxers (Italy) in the name of transgender during the Olympics?”

Hommy Yemi commented: “Finally! Biology is not bigotry. Protecting the female category with actual science (SRY gene testing) restores fairness and safety for women athletes. Well done, President Coventry.”

Robert Artigo stated: “Banning transgender women? If I’m not mistaken a transgender woman, is a man. What did I miss.”

Dandelion Janded remarked: “Biological men should play in men’s sports. Going trans doesn’t change your biological status; it simply makes the competition unequal. Sports should remain a fair and level playing field.”

Cute C concluded: “Finally, someone (Coventry) with common sense.”

The debate over homosexuality and gender identity has long attracted strong opinions in Zimbabwe.

Former President Robert Mugabe was among Africa’s most outspoken critics of homosexuality.

On several occasions, he condemned gays and lesbians, once arguing that “dogs and pigs know their partners” and questioning why human beings did not recognise what he described as the natural order.

“They (gays and lesbians) are worse than dogs and pigs. I keep pigs and the male pig knows the female one.”

His remarks drew widespread international criticism from human rights organisations, while also finding support among some conservative groups in Zimbabwe and elsewhere.
