SA accelerates tourism investment

CAPE TOWN, (CAJ News) – SOUTH Africa is moving to accelerate investment in tourism infrastructure through a new partnership between the Departments of Tourism and Public Works and Infrastructure.

The initiative is intended to unlock investment-ready projects, improve tourism facilities and strengthen the sector’s contribution to economic growth and job creation.

Under the arrangement, Infrastructure South Africa will provide technical support to help move tourism projects from planning to implementation, according to the Department of Tourism.

The government views infrastructure as an important component of its strategy to expand tourism, particularly by improving facilities and destinations capable of attracting domestic and international visitors.

The initiative comes as South Africa seeks to increase investment in tourism infrastructure while ensuring that the benefits of the industry reach a wider section of the population.

Tourism remains an important source of employment, business activity and foreign revenue, supporting hotels, restaurants, transport operators, tour companies, attractions and small enterprises across the country.

The latest intervention builds on government efforts to develop a pipeline of investment-ready tourism projects.

Earlier this year, authorities announced eight projects valued at more than R1 billion as part of efforts to stimulate investment and create jobs in tourism.

The new partnership is expected to improve coordination between government departments and reduce delays that can prevent potentially viable projects from reaching construction and operational stages.

Infrastructure South Africa will assist with project preparation, investment facilitation and coordination, helping to identify obstacles and support the development of projects capable of attracting public and private capital.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille has repeatedly emphasised the importance of investment in infrastructure to expanding the sector and creating opportunities for communities.

The government is also seeking to position tourism as a broader driver of inclusive economic development rather than an industry concentrated only in established destinations.

Improved infrastructure in emerging tourism areas could create opportunities for rural communities, small businesses and local entrepreneurs while encouraging visitors to explore destinations beyond the country’s major tourism centres.

For the private sector, a stronger pipeline of prepared projects could create opportunities in accommodation, attractions, transport, hospitality and related services.

For communities, the government expects increased tourism activity to generate employment and stimulate local economies.

The initiative forms part of a broader effort to strengthen South Africa’s tourism competitiveness by addressing infrastructure constraints and improving the investment environment.

Officials believe closer cooperation between government institutions and investors can help turn tourism potential into functioning projects and sustainable economic opportunities.

As international competition for tourists intensifies, South Africa faces pressure to ensure that its destinations remain accessible, attractive and adequately supported by infrastructure.

The latest agreement signals government’s intention to make infrastructure development a central pillar of that strategy.
