New Honda e-clutch arrives in SA

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – HONDA Motor Southern Africa is set to introduce its innovative Honda E-Clutch technology to the local market, bringing a new level of convenience, control and riding enjoyment to motorcyclists across the country.

The system will debut on the 2026 Honda XL750 Transalp and Honda NX500, two models widely suited to South Africa’s diverse riding conditions, ranging from urban commuting to long-distance touring and light off-road exploration.

Honda E-Clutch combines elements of quickshifters, manual clutch operation and Honda’s Dual Clutch Transmission technology into a lightweight, compact system weighing just 2kg.

Despite its advanced functionality, the clutch and transmission hardware remain largely identical to conventional motorcycle systems, supporting its future application across multiple models.

The technology removes the need to use the clutch lever when changing gears. Riders simply operate the shift pedal for smooth and rapid upshifts and downshifts, while also being able to start and stop without using the clutch.

The system activates automatically when the engine is started, helping to prevent stalling and ensuring smooth take-offs, particularly in stop-start urban traffic.

Honda says the system is designed to enhance both performance and practicality. Riders retain full flexibility, with the option to use the clutch lever manually at any time, after which the system re-engages automatically.

It can also be fully deactivated via handlebar controls for a traditional riding experience.

The E-Clutch system further allows riders to tailor their riding feel through three selectable modes — HARD, MEDIUM and SOFT — adjusting the force required for gear changes.

It can also prompt downshifting when the selected gear is too high for the riding speed, improving safety and responsiveness.

The system manages clutch engagement using real-time data including engine speed, throttle position, vehicle speed and gear selection.

An actuator unit with dual motors housed within the engine cover handles clutch control, while adjustments to fuel injection and ignition timing ensure smooth and consistent performance.

Junya Ono, Large Project Leader at Honda Motor Co., Ltd, said the system is designed to make riding more enjoyable and accessible while maintaining sporty performance.

“Our Honda E-Clutch is designed to offer motorcyclists a new kind of experience that can make their riding even more fun and exciting,” he said.

“It also adds peace of mind and comfort to town riding or the daily commute.”

In South Africa, the XL750 Transalp will cater to adventure riders seeking long-distance capability, while the NX500 targets newer riders and commuters looking for ease of use and versatility.

Honda says the introduction of E-Clutch reflects its commitment to rider-focused innovation and adapting global technology to local riding needs.
