ACCRA, (CAJ News) – MTN Ghana has received notice of an award of additional spectrum in the 700 MHz and 3 GHz mid-band frequencies, paving the way for the telecommunications operator to strengthen its 5G and mobile broadband services across the country.
MTN Group announced on Friday that its Ghanaian subsidiary had received the notice from Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) for the award of spectrum intended to support the provision of high-speed 5G and mobile broadband services.
The spectrum licences will run for 15 years, with MTN Ghana now finalising the formalities and payment obligations required to complete the acquisition.
Under the notice of award, MTN Ghana will acquire two 20 MHz lots in the 700 MHz band for a licence fee of US$100.9 million. In the 3 GHz band, the company will acquire 150 MHz, comprising one 150 MHz lot, for US$101.1 million.
The combined licence fees amount to US$202 million.
MTN said the licence payments had already been incorporated into MTN Ghana’s equity free cash-flow outlook, indicating that the investment had been factored into the company’s financial planning.
Following the issuance of the licences, MTN Ghana plans to deploy the additional spectrum alongside its existing spectrum holdings.
The company said the new capacity would strengthen its network, improve service quality and enhance the customer experience across Ghana.
The additional spectrum is also expected to support MTN Ghana’s ambitions to expand 5G mobility and advance efforts to connect homes to high-speed broadband services.
The award comes as demand for reliable and faster mobile connectivity continues to grow across Ghana, with telecommunications operators increasingly investing in network infrastructure and next-generation technologies.
MTN said the additional spectrum would be critical to its efforts to meet rising connectivity requirements while expanding the reach and quality of its 5G services.
The company said MTN Group and MTN Ghana would continue to keep the market informed of material developments as the Ghanaian subsidiary progresses with the rollout of the newly awarded spectrum and high-speed 5G services.
The telecommunications group also thanked shareholders and other stakeholders for their continued support as MTN Ghana undertakes what it described as a strategic investment in its network and digital infrastructure.
The announcement was issued from Fairland, South Africa, on Friday, 2 October 2026.
MTN Ghana is part of MTN Group, one of Africa’s major telecommunications operators, with operations spanning several markets across the continent and the Middle East.
