JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – I PERSONALLY grew up listening to Dolly Parton’s Country & Western music, and she was my favourite country and western artist.

Her voice could make heartbreak sound beautiful, hope feel possible and ordinary life seem worthy of a song.

Now, following her death in Nashville on 25 August 2026, aged 80, the world is remembering not merely a superstar, but an extraordinary storyteller, entrepreneur and humanitarian.

Born on 19 January 1946 in Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains, Nashville, the United States, Parton was the fourth of 12 children of Robert Lee Parton and Avie Lee Parton.

Her family lived in severe poverty, yet music filled their small home.

Her mother sang traditional songs, while Dolly began writing remarkably young; at about six, she wrote “Little Tiny Tasseltop” about a corncob doll.

After performing on local radio and television as a child, Parton moved to Nashville immediately after finishing school.

Her breakthrough came in 1967 when she joined The Porter Wagoner Show.

Her partnership with Porter Wagoner introduced her to a national audience, but she ultimately pursued the solo career she had always imagined.

Her 1967 debut album, Hello, I’m Dolly, announced a songwriter with a distinctive voice and an instinct for unforgettable melodies.

Her catalogue became a treasure house of Country & Western music.

“Jolene”, “I Will Always Love You”, “Coat of Many Colors”, “9 to 5”, “Here You Come Again”, “Love Is Like a Butterfly” and “My Tennessee Mountain Home” remain among her most celebrated recordings.

“I Will Always Love You”, originally written as she left Wagoner, later became an international phenomenon through Whitney Houston.

“Islands in the Stream”, her celebrated duet with Kenny Rogers, demonstrated her ability to cross musical boundaries without losing her country identity.

Parton’s private life was remarkably enduring.

She married businessman Carl Dean in 1966, and they remained together for nearly six decades until his death in March 2025.

They had no children, although Parton was deeply involved with her extended family and became godmother to Miley Cyrus.

Faith was another foundation of her life.

Raised in a Christian household, Parton frequently drew upon biblical themes, gospel music and an enduring belief in God, while describing her personal spirituality in nuanced terms rather than presenting herself simply as conventionally religious.

Her public life was marked by warmth, humour, inclusiveness and generosity.

Away from the recording studio, Parton became a formidable businesswoman.

She helped establish Dollywood in Tennessee in 1986, transforming entertainment and tourism in her home region.

Through the Dollywood Foundation and its Imagination Library, launched in 1995, she championed children’s literacy and helped distribute hundreds of millions of books worldwide.

She also supported medical research, education and disaster relief.

Dolly Parton leaves behind more than records, awards and business ventures.

She leaves a lesson in resilience: a girl from a poor Tennessee family became one of the world’s most recognisable artists without abandoning the values, humour and humanity that shaped her.

Her songs will continue travelling across generations and borders.
