Colombia vote under scrutiny amid irregularity claims

WASHINGTON, (CAJ News) – COLOMBIAN President Gustavo Petro has alleged possible foreign interference in the country’s electoral process, calling for a full audit and recount amid ongoing scrutiny of vote-counting procedures and heightened political tensions.

According to reports, Petro has pointed to alleged irregularities in Colombia’s vote tabulation system and suggested that external actors may have influenced the integrity of the election.

He has urged authorities to ensure transparency through a comprehensive review of the results.

“I warned that the software of the Bautista brothers was vulnerable, according to the 2018 Council of State ruling, and that it should be replaced with public software,” Petro said, reiterating longstanding concerns about the reliability of the country’s electoral infrastructure.

The Colombian leader has previously advocated for international accountability mechanisms, including invoking the United Nations’ “Uniting for Peace” framework in relation to global conflicts, underscoring his broader focus on multilateral oversight and institutional reform.

Human rights lawyer and long-time adviser to President Petro, Daniel Kovalik, said the current political climate reflects deep divisions and serious concerns over electoral integrity and external influence.

“At the moment, it appears that the right-wing candidate, De la Espriella, is ahead by the narrowest of margins amidst credible claims of election irregularities and clear interference on his behalf by the United States,” Kovalik said.

He warned that any political shift towards right-wing leadership could reverse hard-won social gains and deepen instability.

“Should the results hold, I fear that Colombia will return to the days of terror against the population, and specifically against social movements,” he said.

“This is the result the Trump administration wanted and helped to bring about – not only in Colombia, but also in other Latin American countries. We are witnessing a new Operation Condor. These are truly dark times.”

Kovalik also cited allegations of electoral malpractice, including vote-buying, voter intimidation and politically motivated violence during the campaign period.

“There were certainly many instances of vote-buying and voter intimidation by the right, as well as people being blocked from voting,” he said.

“There were also numerous acts of politically motivated violence, including kidnappings and killings, leading up to the election.”

As Colombia awaits final confirmation of results, the allegations have intensified debate over electoral transparency, democratic safeguards and the role of international actors in Latin American politics.

Supporters of President Petro argue that his administration has consistently prioritised institutional reform, social justice and democratic accountability in the face of entrenched political and economic interests.

Observers say the outcome of the dispute is likely to have significant implications for Colombia’s political stability and its relations with international partners.
