NEW DELHI, (CAJ News) – INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Amman on a state visit to Jordan aimed at strengthening cooperation among Global South partners and deepening bilateral ties in trade, defence, energy and technology, as the two countries mark 75 years of diplomatic relations.
Modi was received by Jordanian Prime Minister Jafar Hassan, underscoring the importance Amman attaches to its partnership with New Delhi.
The visit comes at a time of heightened diplomatic engagement by India across West Asia and beyond, as New Delhi seeks reliable partners to promote economic resilience, regional stability and a rules based international order.
In Jordan, discussions are focused on expanding commercial exchanges, enhancing defence collaboration, supporting energy security, and coordinating positions on regional and global issues of mutual concern.
“India values its friendship with Jordan, a trusted partner in West Asia and a strong voice of moderation,” Modi said after his arrival.
“As we celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations, our talks will focus on trade, defence cooperation, clean energy and people to people ties, guided by a shared commitment to peace and the global good.”
Prime Minister Hassan welcomed Modi by highlighting the depth of the relationship and its future potential.
“Jordan and India are bound by decades of friendship, mutual respect and cooperation,” he said.
“This visit reflects our shared determination to expand economic opportunities, strengthen political coordination and work together for regional stability and sustainable development.”
India and Jordan established diplomatic relations in 1950, and their partnership has steadily broadened over the decades.
Political ties have been marked by regular high-level exchanges and close coordination in multilateral forums, including the United Nations, where both countries advocate dialogue, sovereignty and peaceful conflict resolution.
Jordan has consistently supported India on key international issues, while India has backed Jordan’s role as a pillar of stability in the Middle East.
Economic cooperation has gained momentum, with bilateral trade spanning pharmaceuticals, engineering goods, textiles, fertilizers and chemicals.
Indian companies have invested in Jordan’s manufacturing, information technology and services sectors, while Jordan offers India a strategic gateway to West Asian and European markets.
The two sides are now exploring new opportunities in renewable energy, food security and digital innovation.
Defence and security cooperation also form an important pillar of the relationship. The countries have engaged in training, capacity building and exchanges aimed at countering terrorism and enhancing regional security.
Cultural and people to people links, including education, tourism and yoga and Ayurveda exchanges, further reinforce mutual understanding.
Modi’s visit is intended to provide strategic direction to the partnership for the coming decades, building on a foundation of trust and shared values.
As both nations look ahead, India and Jordan see their collaboration as contributing not only to bilateral prosperity, but also to wider stability and cooperation across the Global South.
Officials said the visit would conclude with agreements, business meetings and cultural engagements, signaling a renewed commitment to long term partnership, pragmatic cooperation and sustained dialogue that reflects the maturity, balance and growing ambition of India Jordan relations.
