MOSCOW, (CAJ News) – RUSSIAN Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov sparked widespread online discussion after responding sarcastically to a question from an American journalist about Russia’s alleged support for Iran during the ongoing conflict involving the United States.

The exchange took place amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where the United States has accused Iran of actions threatening American interests in the region.

Some reports and commentators have also speculated about Russia’s relationship with Tehran, although no publicly verified evidence has been presented to substantiate claims that Moscow is directly assisting Iran in targeting US forces.

During a media briefing, an unidentified American journalist asked Lavrov: “Is Russia helping Iran target US troops?”

Rather than answering directly, Lavrov replied: “Nice hairstyle.”

The brief response quickly circulated across social media platforms, prompting thousands of reactions from users debating the role of major powers in international conflicts and accusing Western governments of applying inconsistent standards to foreign policy.

Many commentators compared the question to the extensive military, financial and logistical support provided by the United States and its allies to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion of the country.

One social media user, Dr Alex Shalabi, wrote: “Why doesn’t this reporter ask, ‘Is America helping Ukraine target Russian troops?'”

Another user, identified as Prophet Kay, suggested the question resembled intelligence gathering rather than journalism, while Brad Ellis argued that critics should not object to Russia supporting Iran when Western nations have openly backed Ukraine.

Yasir K, posting from Pakistan, commented: “The USA is helping Israel head to toe. What’s wrong if Russia helps Iran a bit?”

Another contributor, Chirag Singh, claimed Russia would have little reason to refrain from supporting Iran after Western governments armed Ukraine during its conflict with Moscow.

A user posting under the name Truth Matters argued that the United States’ foreign policy had contributed to rising geopolitical tensions, describing the current situation as a consequence of earlier strategic decisions.

The exchange reflects growing international debate over military alliances and competing narratives surrounding conflicts in both Eastern Europe and the Middle East.

As tensions continue, statements by senior officials are increasingly scrutinised online, where public opinion remains sharply divided over the actions of the world’s leading powers.
