Brazil, Morocco held Brazil to a goalless draw

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – AFRICA’S opening chapter at the FIFA World Cup 2026 has delivered a mixture of triumph, resilience and hard lessons, but the early signs suggest the continent’s growing influence on the global game remains firmly intact.

Five of Africa’s 10 representatives have completed their opening matches at the tournament being jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

The results have produced one victory, two draws and two defeats, offering a balanced picture of a continent determined to compete with football’s traditional powers.

The standout result came from Côte d’Ivoire, whose disciplined 1-0 victory over Ecuador demonstrated the quality and maturity that African teams increasingly bring to the world stage.

The win not only strengthened the Ivorians’ hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds but also reinforced Africa’s reputation for producing tactically astute and technically gifted sides.

Morocco continued the momentum generated by their historic 2022 World Cup campaign by securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Brazil.

Holding one of football’s most decorated nations remains a significant achievement and serves as further evidence that Morocco belong among the elite teams in international football.

Perhaps the most remarkable result belonged to Cape Verde.

The tiny island nation, with a population of little more than half a million people, earned a goalless draw against Spain.

For many Africans, the result symbolised the power of determination and organisation over reputation and resources.

It was a reminder that even the continent’s smallest nations can compete with football giants.

Not all the results were positive.

Tunisia suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden, while South Africa went down 2-0 to host nation Mexico.

Both teams now face immense pressure in their remaining group matches if they are to keep their qualification hopes alive.

Yet these setbacks do not diminish the broader significance of Africa’s presence at the expanded 48-team tournament.

For a continent of approximately 1.5 billion people, the World Cup is more than a sporting competition.

It is a global stage on which African nations can challenge stereotypes, showcase talent and inspire future generations.

The early performances suggest African football continues to evolve.

The continent’s teams are increasingly capable of matching the world’s best in organisation, athleticism and tactical discipline.

While challenges remain, the opening fixtures have provided ample reason for optimism.

With five African teams still to begin their campaigns, hopes remain high that the continent can produce another memorable World Cup and perhaps its deepest run yet.

FIFA World Cup Results:

Spain 0-0 Cape Verde
Sweden 5-1 Tunisia
Cote d’Ivoire 1-0 Ecuador
Brazil 1-1 Morocco
Mexico 2-0 South Africa
