JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – BRITISH holidaymakers are increasingly choosing Cape Verde as their preferred sunshine destination, with the Atlantic archipelago enjoying record growth in arrivals from the United Kingdom during the opening months of 2026.

Official tourism figures show that more than 185,000 British visitors travelled to Cape Verde between January and March, representing a 37 per cent increase compared with the same period last year.

The rise highlights the country’s growing reputation as a safe, welcoming and convenient alternative for travellers seeking year-round warmth, beautiful beaches and a relaxed island atmosphere.

Sal Island remains the centre of this tourism boom, accounting for the majority of hotel arrivals and overnight stays across the archipelago.

The island’s modern resorts, walkable beachfront areas and reliable tourism infrastructure continue to attract British families, couples and groups looking for a straightforward and enjoyable holiday experience within a five to six-hour flight from the UK.

Cape Verde’s appeal is strengthened by its climate, with warm temperatures throughout the year and more than 4,000 hours of annual sunshine.

Combined with minimal time difference from Britain, the destination is increasingly being described by travel operators as offering a Caribbean-style escape without long-haul fatigue.

Tourism plays a central role in Cape Verde’s economy and the sector continues to expand steadily. Hotels welcomed more than 1.24 million guests in 2025, while overnight stays rose to over 6.1 million.

British visitors accounted for the largest share of international tourism, ahead of Portugal, Germany and France.

Hamilton Jair M. L. Fernandes, President of the Board of Directors of the Instituto do Turismo de Cabo Verde, said the country’s stability, hospitality and strong governance remain among its greatest attractions for international visitors.

He added that Cape Verde offers travellers a diverse range of experiences, including beach holidays, water sports, culture, music, cuisine and nature tourism, all supported by a peaceful democratic environment and competitive value for money.

Authorities have also intensified health and hygiene measures across the tourism sector, including additional training for hotels and restaurants and the introduction of enhanced safety certification programmes.

Officials say these initiatives form part of a broader strategy to strengthen visitor confidence and maintain high international standards.

Airlines and tour operators are responding to demand by increasing direct services from the UK to Sal and other islands, making travel even more accessible for British holidaymakers.

With its combination of sunshine, safety, hospitality and natural beauty, Cape Verde is firmly establishing itself as one of the most attractive and fastest-growing holiday destinations for British travellers in 2026.

Government and industry leaders believe investment in sustainable tourism, air connectivity and environmental protection will ensure that Cape Verde’s popularity continues to grow while preserving the islands’ unique culture, hospitality and surroundings for generations
